An accent chair is quite simply a chair placed in a room, that ‘accents’ or highlights other pieces of furniture, like the sofa.
Of course, with it being a chair it can be used for practical reasons too, like extra seating. An easier way of explaining the purpose of an accent chair is that they’re bought individually, and not as a set or suite.
Contemporary accent chairs come in loads of designs, colors and levels of comfort, from a simple straight backed chair with arms to a luxurious chaise lounge.
If you’re in the market to purchase one, ideally you should choose something that will work with the rest of the furniture in the room, creating an overall harmonious look while still standing out, and possibly even being a focal point.
How To Choose The Right Accent Chair
The right blue accent chair in your home should create a little bit of dramatic flair and represent your style or personality.
In our house the accent chair was my way of bringing a little bit of me into the living room, because hubby wanted a practical sofa (read ‘plain and boring’) that would last us a long time.
If you, like me, are looking to add a little personality along with practicality then there are a few guidelines when choosing modern or contemporary accent chairs.
Define your style and space
The style of your home and the space available are two important factors when buying an accent chair. As much as you’d love a chaise lounge it doesn’t make sense if your living room is too small to accommodate it.
Also think of the space where you want to place your chair. A reading corner or fire-place calls for something cosy and oversized while a hallway or passage could do with something a little less comfortable.
Think about how you’re going to use it
Is it going to be used often? Then you need an accent chair that’s comfortable and can handle a fair amount of ‘wear and tear’.
If you want extra seating in the dining room you’ll want something firm and sturdy and at the correct height and if your chair is going to be ornamental then a handcrafted or antique chair will be a good choice.
Where you place your chair is important
It makes sense that where you put your chair is important. It needs to add to the overall look of the room and create an inviting atmosphere.
The wrong chair in the wrong place has the potential to make a room feel cluttered and be more of an inconvenience.
In order to put an honest and unbiased article together, I’ve read various reviews across multiple sites and have taken into consideration the positive and negative feedback.
For this reason my ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ might seem odd, with ‘comfortable’ as a pro but ‘uncomfortable’ as a con.
Generally the reviews are based on my opinion but where I haven’t had the chance to try out a chair myself, there might be conflicting positives and negatives.
Best Blue Accent Chairs Reviewed
Poundex Bobkona Ansley Microfiber Accent Chair
I love this blue Poundex Bobkona Ansley accent chair for so many reasons. It’s one of those ‘curl up in the corner with a great book’ contemporary accent chairs.
It has a solid wooden frame and should last you a good few years. It’s ideal for a living room, a bedroom and even a nursery.
The general consensus seems to be it’s a great chair for the price. Some customers commented on it not being good quality but in the same sentence saying a well-made chair of this size would cost a whole lot more.
- Excellent value for money
- Easy to assemble
As mentioned there aren’t obvious cons. There are one or two customers who think it’s a badly made chair and that it’s uncomfortable but I would disagree with them, especially after considering the price of this chair. You should try it out and decide for yourself.
Baxton Studio Cradle Chair with Ash-Wood Rockers
The Baxton cradle chair with ash wood rockers provides a very cool twist to an old classic, the rocking chair.
The slick designed is styled similarly to the Eames rocker, but definitely nowhere near the same price tag. In terms of color, I would describe it as a ‘robin’s egg blue’, gently accenting an area rather than over powering everything in close proximity.
Perfect for a nursery, a playroom or a living room and does exactly what it’s meant to do, accent an area.
As far as quality goes, it’s very well put together with chromed steel supports and ash wood rockers. Simply put, it’s a rockin’ rocking chair!
- Excellent value for money
- Quick and easy to put together
- Retro and very cool
- Smooth rocking motion
- Too small
- Not comfortable
Vivon Cloud Comfort Foam Blue Accent Chair
Combining style and comfort the Vivon Cloud foam chair has been created by an award winning design team and will look good in most modern homes.
If you haven’t had any foam furniture before, you might not know it arrives flat and needs time to inflate. Allow it to do so before calling the manufacturers to say it’s faulty.
Because it’s not too big it will work well in a dorm room, an apartment or a teen’s room but, on the flipside, there are a few people who consider the Vivon Cloud accent chair too small and not comfortable enough for an adult.
Once again I think it comes down to your personal taste and what you had in mind versus what you got.
All in all this a gorgeous lounger, and as far as contemporary accent chair goes, it’s a firm favorite.
- Ergonomically designed
- Good value for money
- Comfortable and durable fabric
- Badly fitted cover
- Not big enough for adults, especially men
